The Pearl Anniversary of the Annual Petite Martinique Whitsuntide Festival enjoyed the increased generosity of the Grenada Electricity Services (GRENLEC).
At the official opening ceremony last week Friday, manager of the company’s Carriacou Branch, Wallace Collins, handed a cheque to the committee valued at $6,000. The donation marked a $1000 increase from previous years.
Collins used a parade flambeau torch for the presentation, in keeping with the company’s new thrust of allowing an item of the event to represent the symbol of GRENLEC’s financial contribution. President of the committee, Terrance Logan praised GRENLEC for their loyalty to the festival and assured that the money would be used for the purpose for which it was donated.
Chairperson of the festival’s board, Kindra Maturine Stewart gave a brief address and Senator Norland Cox officially declared the festival open.
Collins said that as a corporate citizen they are always cognisant of the need to support events of this nature which impact on the cultural and social life of the local residents. He pointed out that they have been observing the growth of the festival and therefore wanted to match such improvement with their contribution. The branch manager further noted that the donation supports the challenges faced by the committee to raise the funds necessary to host a successful festival in a community as small as Petite Martinique.
Stewart and Cox, along with Devon King awarded trophies and monetary prizes at Monday’s closing ceremony.
