The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy (MoCRERE) hosted the Grenada–CCCCC Project Portfolio Launch on 3 September 2024, at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, Grand Anse Beach.

This launch marks an important milestone in strengthening the partnership between the CCCCC and the Government of Grenada to address the impending challenges of climate change.

The objectives of the event were to:

  • Establish a working rapport between national stakeholders in Grenada and the CCCCC
  • Present and discuss the Grenada-CCCCC portfolio of projects
  • Discuss and identify information requirements to facilitate efficient project implementation in Grenada
  • Present the CCCCC’s mandate and amplify the CCCCC’s visibility
  • Introduce the CCCCC Grievance Redress Mechanism

In her powerful address, Hon. Kerryne James, Minister for Climate Resilience, the Environment, and Renewable Energy, underscored the urgent need for action. “The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat; it is here, it is now, and it is relentless,” she declared, capturing the gravity of the situation facing not only Grenada but the entire Caribbean region.

Minister James highlighted the critical role of the ECP–Caribbean Project, emphasising its significance beyond a mere initiative. “The ECP–Caribbean Project is not just another initiative; it is a lifeline for Grenada and our fellow Caribbean nations,” she stated. The project, backed by Global Affairs Canada and supported by a robust regional partnership across seven countries, is designed to directly benefit thousands of citizens while indirectly impacting over half of Grenada’s population.

The Minister went on to stress that the project is a carefully planned, data-driven response to the real and pressing challenges on the ground. “Let us not lose sight of what is at stake,” she urged, calling on all stakeholders to recognise the importance of the work being undertaken.

The CCCCC and the Ministry will also host 4 breakout stakeholder consultations funded by Global Affairs Canada and the Green Climate Fund immediately after the portfolio launch. The sessions are as follows:

  • GCF Low Emission Development Readiness Project: Establishing Institutional Arrangements and Coordination Mechanisms, 3–5 September 2024
  • Enhancing Ecosystems and Coastal Protection for Climate Change Resilience in the Caribbean Project (ECP): National Stakeholder Workshop, 3–4 September 2024
  • CCCCC-Grenada Coordination Mechanism Requirements, 4–6 September 2024
  • Stakeholder Consultation to advance GCF Readiness Project to Enhance Grenada’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP), 6 September 2024

Dr Colin Young, Executive Director of the CCCCC, emphasised that “this partnership with the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable signals the CCCCC’s renewed commitment to continue serving its Member States to pursue climate-resilient development in the face of increasing climate-related threats. By fostering collaboration among national stakeholders, the CCCCC, in partnership with the Government, will develop projects that will not only address some of the urgent climate-related challenges faced by Grenada but will ensure that the projects are responsive to the needs of its people.”

Through these consultations, the CCCCC and the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy will gather valuable input from stakeholders, ensuring that projects are country-owned, aligned to national priorities and specifically tailored to Grenada’s unique climate resilient needs. This collaborative approach is essential for driving meaningful and sustainable climate action in the region. By working together, sharing knowledge, and aligning efforts, the CCCCC and the Government of Grenada are making significant strides towards a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
