A healthy diet can help promote the health of the prostate. This can also reduce the likelihood of developing prostate cancer which is the most common cancer found in men.
The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland that is part of the reproductive system of men. The gland is responsible for producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. This gland can become enlarged for unknown reasons; however, the most common cause of an enlarged prostate is prostate cancer which can be mild and cause the slow growth of the gland which requires minimal treatment or it can be an aggressive form prostate cancer which can grow quickly and is more invasive.
A man is at risk of prostate cancer if he is over the age of 50, is of African descent, have a family history of prostate problems or cancer and breast cancer and if he is obese or overweight. The symptoms of prostate cancer are trouble urinating, blood in the urine and semen, erectile dysfunction, a decreased force in the stream of urine, unexplained weight loss and bone pain.
A man who is at risk of prostate cancer should consume a diet that is, low in unhealthy fats, low in simple or processed sugar, high in fibre and filled with fruits and vegetables. Research indicates that regularly eating certain foods like cooked tomatoes, cold water fish — like salmon and sardines — pomegranate, cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, bok choy, broccoli and cauliflower and green tea and coffee can help reduce the likelihood of developing prostate cancer.
