The services of a pan tuner have been secured to help with plans to revitalise steelpan playing within communities of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Trinidad tuner Federico Gay, under an arrangement through the Division of Youth of the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, is presently on island. He is tuning pans that were donated to the Ministry by the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (Grenlec) over 10 years ago.
Gay, whose maternal and paternal grandparents were originally from Carriacou, also volunteered to clean and spray the pans for the Ministry.
The Ministry extends sincerest thanks to George Andrew, owner of Hotel Laurena, for providing free accommodation and meals for Gay.
Youth Officer Georgina Ray said the tuning of the pans now sets the pace for steelpan to once more become part of the culture of the twin-isle parish.
Already, students from the Mt Pleasant Government School and within the Top Hill and Mt Royal communities are having practice sessions with the hope of performing at the upcoming Regatta Festival and Grenada’s Carnival.
