The Dickon Mitchell administration, with technical assistance from the World Bank, is updating the National Energy Policy (NEP) through a multi-stage process that involves receiving contributions and or comments from the public.
As a result, the general public has until 21 April 2023 to comment and or contribute to the updated draft document presented to direct stakeholders on 10 March through a special virtual meeting of the sustainable development council.
“The Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy, is seeking feedback from the public and other interested parties on the Goals and Policies towards the Update of the National Energy Policy,” said a news release from the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment, and Renewable Energy and issued via the Government Information Service (GIS). “The NEP is meant to guide Grenada’s energy sector in its transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The general policy objective is correlated with the overall National Sustainable Development Plan 2035 and the National Determined Contributions, which aim to promote sustainable development and allow Grenada to meet its emission reduction target, which is a 40% reduction of the 2010 emission levels by 2030.”
The release explained, “The vision is to address the constraints and issues affecting the development of the energy sector by increasing the share of modern renewable energy consumed in Grenada and providing more affordable access to electricity for all Grenadians, thus contributing to a sustainable and environmentally conscious society.”
Prepared by MRC Consultants and Transaction Advisers (Spain) and Grenadian individual consultant Anesia Peters, the National Energy Policy (NEP) 2023-2035 is Grenada’s overarching high-level planning document that will anchor the energy development agenda over the period 2022-2035.
“It is developed around the broad themes of “a thriving economy; an energy independent nation; and sustainable and resilient energy sector and energy services,” said the technical assistance document presented to Government on 6 March.
The policy recommends a systematic and comprehensive framework to guide the country’s strategic priorities for balanced, sustainable energy development over the medium term and simultaneously lays a solid foundation for Grenada’s energy transformation over the long term.
“The NEP 2023-2035 draws inspiration from Grenada’s National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP) 2020-2035, setting out the vision for the country’s sustainable development and is grounded in Grenadian aspirations: it represents the desire of the people to improve their quality of life and living standards for this and future generations.” The policy document is available on the Government’s website.
