The veterinary programme conducted by the Division of Agriculture within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government is reaping success.

The team led by Veterinary Surgeon Dr Linton Andrews has been providing weekly services to livestock farmers on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Dr Andrews said the response from farmers to the programme has been positive. However, there is need for them to implement more modern farming techniques, he added. He noted that the Government, through the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, supports the programme 100% through the provision of medicines and other implements.

Meanwhile, with the islands presently experiencing a period of dry weather, Assistant Agriculture Instructor Lisa Walker is advising farmers against livestock breeding now.

Walker, using the farm of Winston Paul in Brunswick, Carriacou, as an example, said farmers should invest in drought-resistant grass to help in the dry season.

In November 2022, when the programme was reintroduced, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government Hon. Tevin Andrews said he was happy to see the return, as Government works on bringing in new breeds on the island.
