- General election constitutionally due no later than June 2023
- Dr Mitchell represented St George’s Northwest since 1984
- Dickon Mitchell is leader of National Democratic Congress
Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell said that the upcoming general election which is constitutionally due no later than June 2023, will not only be the most fascinating, but the last one for him.
“This coming election campaign will mostly like be my last; not most likely it will be! It will be the most interesting and fascinating one,” said Dr Mitchell who has represented the constituency of St George’s Northwest in the Lower House Parliament or the House of Representatives since 1984.
“Thirty-seven years in this ball game has taught me a lot about politics. Some people have to learn some serious politics, they will learn,” he said as he alluded to last Sunday’s election of lawyer Dickon Mitchell as leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). “You don’t learn from the top down,” he added.
Dickon Mitchell is a newcomer to politics and before the NDC’s convention was described by many as lacking the necessary political experience to lead his party. However, he won the majority of votes from over 300 delegates. Two other persons contested for the leadership.
Making his contribution to a resolution that mandates an extension to the State of Emergency to May 2022, Dr Mitchell said that his government is prepared to do the right to save lives though it may cost him some votes.
“We are taking a decision to protect our country. I have had to tell a number of people on a number of occasions, it may cost us some political votes because of some of the decisions that we are taking, but so be it. We should be more concerned that it saves lives and if it’s one life for 100 votes we are going to do just that. One life lost is just too much,” he said.
There are objections to the extension of the State of Emergency as part of the government control and containment measures against Covid-19. Because of the State of Emergency, the country has been functioning under a series of Emergency Powers regulations which, among other things, allow for a curfew and other restrictions on citizens.
Speaking about the upcoming election, the Prime Minister said that he is confident that citizens who will go to the polls whenever the date is called, will do what is best for them and the country. “I have confidence in the Grenadian people, I have confidence that they know what is best for them and they can see something when it is clear, I have no doubt about this,” he said.
Promising to say a lot more when the time is right, Dr Mitchell who has led his New National Party (NNP) to win all 15 seats in the House of Representatives on 3 separate occasions said that some people who are new to politics as well as those involved in politics, will soon learn the difference between owning a political party and its supporters and thoughts of the wider voting population.
“It might be easy to buy a political party, but it’s not easy to buy the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Let’s get it right, that one difficult,” he said.
i would like to reiterate the comment within the last statement of ADM, why haven’t we held the PM accountable for his false statement to the people regarding our so called oil exploration . He was elected on the promise that it was 90% surety that there was oil was found , its been almost 4years and we still have not seen or heard anything regarding the subject .As a citizen of Grenada living abroad , i was excited to hear the announcement ,but very cautious that it was a political stunt , our people have been deceived by a charismatic leader who would say anything to be elected .
NNP and Keith Mitchell deserve some criticism but who else is capable of leading the country out of this pandemic and bringing back economic advancement? Who? Dickon Mitchell? …you’ll joking.
I know right
As I always say, it is people like you that have the country where it is. No vision, just following with blinders on. Ready to say how high massah. Not caring about the country and the reality we face under these people for the ‘many’ years. Supporting dictatorship, suppression, hardship, and the list can be exhaustive.
Maybe you’re one of those who benefits, so therefore, ” don’t cut my bread” on account of the important issues we have been plagued with.
Wake up! You sleep too much.

As Vince Joseph commented..”ain’t seen no progress/ development for the past 30 years.. ”

Julien. Please use your full name when making comments on NOW GRENADA as other people have the same name and should not be construed as the one(s) making the comments you are making. Thank you. Also I suggest that NOW Grenada make sure that this does not happen.
The power is with the people as you said Sir. Don’t know if you believe your words, however I am sure that you will soon find out.
As I said on many occasions and I will say it again. I haven’t seen any development in Grenada for the past 30 years. Our roads are the same or even worse. Agriculture is dead. Tourism is dead. No Healthcare. Government institutions are crumbling post offices, police stations, schools etc etc. All we hear about is scandals and corruptions. Our politicians have turned millionaires overnight. Have u seen any progress? Its time to give the Youths a chance…they will get guidance and stop your foolishness about experience. I want to ask u personally what are u talking about? YOU only fortify your base thats how your.were able to remain in power(political expediency). All this social programs where ta .payers monies are swindled. Its time Grenadians open their eyes..the days of corn beef and biscuits elections are over. These vampires and vultures must GO!
Everyting that has a beginning has an end Keith, enjoy your retirement 🙂
This is the first time I have ever agreed with him, no names, but the elder(ly) gentleman. Drink your bush tea ’cause you will need the energy to explain your lies, subterfuge, and exactly why it was easy to sell us, just like Joseph’s brothers sold him.

Seriously!!! what has this party been doing for years…I guess one’s memory fades and age…”Where is the promised Oil, including the serious wealth it was going to deliver to the people of Grenada?
