Today, St George’s University (SGU) announced enhanced safety protocols on the True Blue campus, including pausing all in-person education.
SGU is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and the country of Grenada. This decision was made in the spirit of community support and with an abundance of caution to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19 in Grenada.
SGU continues to see a very low number of infections on campus and in the SGU community and will maintain periodic screening of all members of the SGU community. In addition, the very few on campus who are Covid positive are experiencing no symptoms or only very mild symptoms as a result of their fully vaccinated status. No SGU connected individuals have been hospitalised.
The new safety protocol will entail a transition to online education for all students in Grenada for the next 2 weeks. This will include all School of Medicine Basic Sciences students and students in the Schools of Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies including those in Grenada.
During this period, any students, faculty and staff on campus will be required to wear masks both indoors and outdoors and group activities will be restricted to open-air spaces. Campus operations will be reduced, and all non-essential employees will continue their work duties from home whenever possible.
“We believe this decision is consistent with the best practice recommendations of leading health organizations and is in the best interest of our campus community,” said Dr Richard Liebowitz, Vice Chancellor of St George’s University. “While we are not anticipating a prolonged suspension of in-person classes, students who wish to leave Grenada may return home to continue their studies online. All active employees will continue to receive full pay and benefits.”
“We will continue to work diligently with the government and our international partners to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 in Grenada,” Dr Charles Modica, Chancellor of SGU, stated. “Other institutions in Grenada and around the globe have implemented similar measures in recent days that limit the density of large populations to minimise spread of the virus”.
SGU will re-evaluate the situation after 14 days and further decisions will be based on the circumstances in Grenada.

Every body is crying shame on you, shame on you, that is all we hear. Sgu is indeed trying to clean up their mess. However I have noticed the don’t care attitude of the students on and off campus , that they cannot hide . Everything is emerging and we want to hold our heads and trying to shame ppl for speaking out . This is not the US . We have free speech in Grenada. So hide this post now.
Well, it’s about TIME!!! It’s a shame that a medical school that is located in a country in which the community spread is very high for the past 3 weeks is only NOW telling their students that they must mask OUTSIDE and inside and moving classes to online!! Is this a sick joke??? Grenadians were told to mask inside and outside weeks ago!! I KNOW undergraduate universities doing a better job at protecting the health of their students, staff, and faculty by instituting proper and swift implementation of policies based on daily tracking of COVID infection rates on campus and in the community!!! SGU SHAME ON YOU!!!

The entire campus was tested and of the 3500 people tested, 15 came back as positive. That’s a 0.4% positivity rate. The entire campus is vaccinated (100%). The island of Grenada is looking at 20 times that number EACH DAY. 20% positivity rate of the locals. Only roughly 20% are vaccinated. Cristina, in a time where many things are uncertain, one thing that is certain is that you have no idea what you are talking about. SGU has gone above and beyond what anyone else on the island is doing in terms of masking, vaccinating, testing, and safe distancing.
we have been wearing masks indoors and outdoors on campus for over 2 weeks now. Shame on you for not fact-checking your statement before you try to bash the institution on the internet. They did their absolute best to protect us the students and that’s something that should be talked about more. Every single day y’all find something negative to complain about and this is only making the situation worse. Talking about “shame on you” ….smh lady please be quiet, respectfully.
