The Grenada Electricity Services (GRENLEC), through the Grenada Community Development Agency (GRENCODA) is providing support for a number of students preparing for the new school term.
The agency’s Student Assistance Programme (SAP) is among the programmes selected for support under the Company’s Community Partnership Initiatives (GCPI) and, in highlighting education as a priority for GRENLEC.
Kathy-Ann Thompson, Customer Service Team Member, emphasised the importance of enhancing access to education, in making the presentation to GRENCODA. Thompson noted, “This activity and initiatives like the GRENLEC Debates and the JJ Robinson Trust expand opportunities for learning and enrich the experience of students attending secondary school and T A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC).”
GRENLEC’s partnership with GRENCODA’s SAP spans more than a decade.
Judy Williams, GRENCODA’s General Secretary, is grateful for the visible demonstration of the company’s investment in education and youth. “We too at GRENCODA value education. For more than 20 years, we have been able to assist citizens to climb the ladder of success because of partnerships with institutions like yours.”
GRENCODA provides financial and non-financial support to low income earners and vulnerable families. In 28 years, 2000 students have benefited from the SAP, with 300 currently enrolled in public secondary schools and TAMCC. The Student Assistance Programme also focuses on improving the learning environment by providing parenting training and counseling to develop students and support families.
The $20,000 award to GRENCODA’s Student Assistance Programme is included in the more than $350,000 that GRENLEC is investing in education this year, accounting for one-quarter of the company’s allocation for community development programmes in 2014.
