The Grenada Music Teachers Association (GMTA), will present their annual Awards Recital at 6pm on Wednesday 18 June, at the Trade Centre. The event features music students from across the island who participated in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) music examinations this year, and recognises the top scoring candidates in various categories.
Admission to benefit the piano fund is $10 per adult, $5 per child.
For the past 50 years, the ABRSM has sent a qualified examiner to Grenada to evaluate music students in practical examinations. There are also written theory exams twice a year which are proctored locally. The exams are accredited and the advanced levels can count toward university credit. There are also three levels of diploma which are equivalent to college degrees. Internationally, over 650,000 exams are given each year.
Participation in ABRSM exams continues to grow in Grenada. This year there were 4 days of practical exams, including Practical Musicianship, which is an alternate for the written theory requirement. Recorder students were also entered for the first time.
DISTINCTION AWARDS: Zoei Ollivierre, violinist, and Donja Gordon, cellist, tied with the same high score in the Stringed Instrument category at the Grade 4 level. Zoei also received the only Distinction in Practical Musicianship at Grade 3 and was named Best Overall Musician by the examiner. Arvin Pierre won top score for Band Instrument in Grade 5 saxophone.
